Lana Del Rey says she’s retiring her song “Cola” in the wake of Harvey Weinstein sexual assault claims
The 2012 song references the disgraced movie mogul and an imaginary affair.
Until recently, Lana Del Rey's "Cola" was perhaps most famous for being the song in which she claimed that her "pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola." However, speaking to MTV News, Del Rey has said she will no longer perform the song live due to another of its lyrics, chiefly the one referencing Harvey Weinstein.
The 2012 track features on Del Rey's 2012 EP Paradise and tells of a character urging a married older man to leave his wife and "escape to the great sunshine" with her. The second verse includes the line "Harvey's in the sky with diamonds. And it's making me crazy," which Del Rey now says is a reference to the disgraced former Miramax boss Weinstein.
"When I wrote that song, I suppose I had a Harvey Weinstein/Harry Winston-type of character in mind," she told MTV of the song. "I envisioned, like, a benevolent, diamond-bestowing-upon-starlets visual, like a Citizen Kane or something. I'm not really sure. I thought it was funny at the time, and I obviously find it really sad now. I support the women who have come forward. I think they're really brave for doing that."
Del Rey added that she does not feel "comfortable" singing it live now and that retiring it from future live shows "would be the only right thing to do." She heads out on tour with Jhene Aiko and Kali Uchis in January 2018.
