Grazia U.K. apologizes to Lupita Nyong’o for Photoshopping her hair
The Oscar-winning actress called the magazine out on Instagram.
Lupita Nyong'o has received an apology after accusing U.K.-based Grazia of digitally altering her hair for the front cover of its November edition. Writing on Instagram, Nyong'o said she was "disappointed" in the magazine's decision to edit her appearance in order to "fit their notion of what beautiful hair looks like."
Contacted by The FADER for comment, a representative for Grazia issued the following apology: "Grazia is committed to representing diversity throughout its pages and apologizes unreservedly to Lupita Nyong’o.
"Grazia magazine would like to make it clear that at no point did they make any editorial request to the photographer for Lupita Nyong'o’s hair to be altered on this week’s cover, nor did we alter it ourselves. But we apologize unreservedly for not upholding the highest of editorial standards in ensuring that that we were aware of all alterations that had been made."
Nyong'o posted the November cover image, which shows her with a smooth, cropped hairstyle, alongside pictures from the shoot in which her long, curly hair is tied in a ponytail.
Writing about the cover, the Oscar-winning actress said: "I embrace my natural heritage and despite having grown up thinking light skin and straight, silky hair were the standards of beauty, I now know that my dark skin and kinky, coily hair are beautiful too."
Nyong'o said that she was not consulted about the changes and would not have agreed to an "omission of what is my native heritage."
Solange recently received an apology from the London Evening Standard after a similar incident in which some of her braids were removed from its magazine cover image.
