RuPaul’s “Merry Christmas, Mary” is the best Christmas song of the past decade
It belongs in the Christmas song hall of fame.
As someone who was raised Jewish, I don't have a sense of nostalgia towards Christmas. Perhaps that's why I am very happy with ranking RuPaul's ebullient "Merry Christmas, Mary," off the 2015 holiday album Slay Belles, as one of my very favorite Christmas songs. It's a perfect little disco song with some holiday bells sprinkled on top, like sweet marshmallows on your hot cocoa. It's everything you want out of a holiday song — a short, spunky punch of sound that gets you smiling. I dare you to listen to it and manage to keep your foot from tapping and your shoulders from doing a little shimmy, as Ru sings, "No, this ain't your mama's Christmas carol / So don on, don on your gay apparel."
