Mary J. Blige turned 47 on January 11 and spent the day confirming her place in the showbusiness pantheon with her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Blige broke down in tears as she accepted the honor, telling those in attendance (including Diddy and Apple Music executive Jimmy Iovine) “I’m so grateful for this star right now because I’ve earned it probably three times.”
Other names at the unveiling included Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Tyrese, Andre Harrell, BET's Debra Lee, and Angie Martinez. “Whatever she is going through, she knows she has a responsibility to help others who are going through the same thing,” Diddy said of the R&B icon. “Mary J. Blige has saved a lot of lives. Mary J. Blige has saved a lot of broken hearts.”
Mary J. Blige has won nine Grammys and received 31 nominations over her decades-long career, and was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in the Netflix original film Mudbound.
