When we look back on the most exciting moments in hip-hop in 2018, odds are that list will include the "Who Run It" challenge. It was launched by G Herbo in March, when the Chicago rapper freestyled over the beat for the classic Three 6 Mafia song live on K104FM. Snippets of the appearance caught fire online, eventually reaching Drake, who urged Herbo to release a full version. A few days later, Herbo dropped a remix that delivered on the freestyle's shoulder-bopping promise.
Lots of rappers have since shared their own versions of the song as well. The beat's newfound popularity is a testament to Three 6 Mafia's enduring influence, but the deluge of new versions is also fresh and fun. It's turned into a digital cypher with some genuinely thrilling moments, and it just keeps growing organically.
Below, we've compiled a few of the best versions of the "Who Run It" challenge. Since the craze started with a snippet, we've sprinkled a few of them in with full versions.
G Herbo
CupcakKe
21 Savage
Young M.A
Trippie Redd and Lil Yachty
La Chat
Lil Uzi Vert
G Herbo shared a preview of Uzi's verse on social media. It's rumored to be included on a new remix of Herbo's fire-starting original freestyle.
Dave East and Vado
Chief Keef and Edai
This version isn't technically part of the "Who Run It" challenge – snippets appeared on Edai's Instagram in 2017. But hopefully including it here will encourage Sosa to leak the studio version.
Juicy J
The challenge got so big that even one of the original rappers put out a new take. While he shouts out a few of the rappers who helped give "Who Run It" more life, Juicy J has words for other artists who run with his style without paying tribute: "Paying homage is a real nigga move, bitch I paid my dues / Sold a million out the trunk, you niggas Uber Pool."
