Last night on Twitter, user Cloe Feldman shared a deceptively simple clip of an Instagram poll asking what users hear: yanny or laurel. Its accompanied by a brief audio sample that sounds, impossibly, like both of the two very different words. Much like the dress that came before it, the clip has sent thousands of Twitter users into a confounding tailspin of perception.

According to The Atlantic, there are a few reasons for this audible phenomenon, most of which whittle down to differences in vocal tracts and frequency. The word being spoken isn't quite yanny or laurel, says Brown University phonetician Chelsea Sanker. But Twitter user Steve Pomeroy noted that the pronunciation sounds different at varying pitches. Bottom line is, both sides are right in the debate....but, in the mind of this writer, team yanny is just a bit more right.
