Cardi B is nominated five times at the 2019 Grammys
Kendrick Lamar leads the nominees with eight while Drake has seven.
The nominations for the 2019 Grammy Awards were announced on Friday morning. This year's set of nominations do not reflect those of 12 months ago where no women were up for either Song Of The Year or Record Of The Year, though the two most nominated artists are male: Kendrick Lamar with eight nominations and Drake with seven.
Cardi B is up for Album of the Year for Invasion Of Privacy plus Record of the Year for "I Like It." She has five nominations in total, a number matched only by Lady Gaga and six-time nominee Brandi Carlisle. Cardi will also compete for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance (“Be Careful”), and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her Maroon 5 collaboration “Girls Like You.”
Five of the eight acts nominated for Best Album at the 2019 awards are women with H.E.R., Brandi Carlisle, Kacey Musgraves, and Janelle Monáe competing alongside the Black Panther soundtrack and Drake's Scorpion plus Post Malone's beerbongs & bentleys.
One year on from outgoing Recording Academy president Neil Portnow telling women to “step up” women are far better represented women in this year's nominations. Six women are nominated for Best New Artist while five women are up for Album, Record, and Song of the Year.
Kendrick Lamar’s eight nominations are in the categories: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap Performance (“King’s Dead”), plus two for Best Rap Song (“King’s Dead” and Jay Rock collab “WIN”), plus Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media (“All the Stars” with SZA from Black Panther).
Behind him is Drake who is nominated for: Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year (“God’s Plan”), Best Rap Song (“God’s Plan” and “Sicko Mode”), and two for Best Rap Performance (“Nice for What” and “Sicko Mode”).
Other big name nominees include The Carters, Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, and Travis Scott. Kanye West and Taylor Swift received just one nomination each in the Best Producer and Best Pop Vocal Album categories, respectively.
The 61st Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on February 10, 2019 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
