Gonnie Garko is a rising DJ in the Toronto scene with co-signs from OVO, and appearances on some top-line bills. She's also a model; You might've seen her on Drake's Instagram in some OVO gear, or in an Off-White campaign. Today, The FADER is sharing her new mix, an hour-long, genre-diverse mix of upbeat, and dancey tunes perfect for any function. There's something here for everyone: a Frank Ocean remix, Rico Nasty fire-up, Beyoncé "Baby Boy" rework, Yaeji cooldown, etc. etc. All excellent; all last-night-on-Earth party worthy if a jet-engine were to fall on you the next morning.
Where are you right now? Describe your surroundings.
Currently I’m in the mountains in Jamaica at EITS Cafe doing a puzzle with my mom and brother. It’s very green. There are so many types of trees. Every few minutes a hummingbird passes by. It’s actually an insane place to be. It’s so beautiful. I can’t even fully process it.
Tell us a bit about this mix. What shaped it?
The mix has a bit of everything. I wanted it to be something my mom could listen to, but also something that showcases music I don’t often get to spin. My mom has had a lot of influence on my music taste, she’s taught me a lot. I wanted to make sure I had as many of my favorite artists or genres I could add, but also make sure it had some of my moms favorite songs—which have translated into becoming a few of mine now. I had to add a few songs that hold sentimental value to me as well.
What do you see people doing to this mix?
I see my friends listening to it in their whips. Many of my close friends have cars. I appreciate them and I hope I made something they can listen to. My sister drives but probably won’t like this mix because she only listens to Fantasia, A Boogie and Ed Sheeran. I see people doing their makeup, cooking, cleaning… really just anything. I’m definitely cleaning my room to this when I get back home.
What is your favorite moment in the mix?
Probably the intro. “Closer to My Dreams” is one of my mom’s favorite songs. The scene of the boy speaking is that guy from iCarly I think. And it’s from a scene in Donnie Darko. Everything else I’m kind of scared of because I didn’t have my equipment when I was making this. I’m also mad I forgot to add “Ordinary Pleasure” by Toro y Moi. Also mad because I forgot to add “Out of Your League” by Blood Orange. Dear Shereen, I’m sorry.
Your name is Gonnie Garko. What Donnie Darko character do you most identify with?
I love my mans Donald. I feel like I’m such a coming of age ass person and I felt like him most when I was in a Catholic high school. I love Jake Gyllenhaal. I love every single character except maybe that bean he plays in Velvet Buzzsaw.
