Madonna samples Parkland shooting survivor Emma González on new song “I Rise”
Listen to the latest Madame X single.
Madonna's new song is a protest song titled "I Rise." The track begins with an excerpt of a speech by Emma González, a survivor of the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland. “[They say] us kids don't know what we're talking about, that we're too young to understand how the government works," González says. "We call BS.”
In a statement accompanying the release, Madonna said she wrote the song "as a way of giving a voice to all marginalized people who feel they don’t have the opportunity to speak their mind. This year is the 50th anniversary of Pride and I hope this song encourages all individuals to be who they are, to speak their minds and to love themselves.”
"I Rise" is taken from Madame X, Madonna's forthcoming album due June 14. She released lead single “Medellín” last month and recently performed the song with Meluma at the Billboard Music Awards 2019.
