Micheal Brun brings Haitian sounds to the forefront on debut album, LOKAL
The producer dug deeper into his Haitian roots on his latest project.
DJ and producer Michael Brun has, so far, dabbled mainly in EDM sounds while offering glimpses into his Haitian roots along the way. On his debut album “Lokal”, he takes an even deeper diver into Haitian genres like konpa and rara, alongside diasporic sounds from Afropop and Afrobeats to reggaeton and dancehall. With appearances from Mr. Eazi, Major Lazer and both established and emerging Haitian artists like Eddy Francois, and BélO, the album serves to give listeners a sonic snapshot of his evolution. “I was hosting these block parties across Haiti and eventually the US, and curating a list of the best Haitian artists to showcase on each stop,” Brun tells The FADER via email. “I was constantly blown away by how good the music was back home. I felt that it needed to be heard by more people.”
Brun says a stint opening for J Balvin opened his eyes to the cross-genre possibilities. “I really learned a lot opening for the Vibras Tour, and saw how deep the cultural connections are between Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean,” he explain. “They are all built off each other and have more similarities than differences.”
