R. Kelly arrested on child pornography charges
The New York Times reports that Kelly is also expected to be charged with racketeering and trafficking later today.
Authorities arrested R. Kelly on Thursday night on a 13-count indictment, with charges related to child pornography and other federal offenses including enticement of a minor and obstruction of justice. The disgraced singer was reportedly walking his dog in Chicago when he was arrested by agents from Homeland Security Investigations. Kelly was taken into custody and is expected to be arraigned at a Chicago federal court on Friday.
The New York Times reports that prosecutors in Brooklyn are speculated to be unveiling a separate indictment later on Friday as well, and will charge Kelly with one count of racketeering and four counts of violating the Mann Act which prohibits human trafficking across state lines.
The new charges are entirely separate from the 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse he was charged with back in February, and the 11 counts of sexual assault and sexual abuse he was charged with in May. "Mr. Kelly was aware of the investigations and the charges were not a surprise," Kelly's attorney Steve Greenberg wrote in a statement. "He had already assembled a team of outstanding federal litigators. He and his lawyers look forward to his day in court, to the truth coming out."
