Kelly Clarkson suggests Taylor Swift should re-record back catalog amid masters debacle
Scooter Braun recently purchased Big Machine Records which houses Swift’s entire pre-2017 discography.
In the last few weeks, various musicians have shown their support for Taylor Swift after news broke that Scooter Braun purchased Big Machine Records—and along with it, Swift's entire discography up to her 2017 album, Reputation. She called the move her "worst case scenario," and shared her dismay via a lengthy post on her Tumblr page, garnering support from fellow artists and friends like Todrick Hall, Lily Allen, and Halsey.
On Saturday night, Kelly Clarkson took to Twitter to offer some advice, telling Swift she should re-record her entire back catalog and encourage her fans to stream the new releases instead of the originals. "U should go in & re-record all the songs that U don’t own the masters on," Clarkson tweeted, adding she should also include new artwork and "some kind of incentive so fans will no longer buy the old versions."
If Swift takes this suggestion to heart, she wouldn't be the first pop star to re-release music due to masters ownership issues. Jojo, who was finally released from former label Blackground after a decade-long battle but was unable to retain or purchase her masters, re-issued her first two albums Jojo and The High Road so they would finally be available on streaming services.
