Kevin Gates is a rapper with remarkable quality and consistency, and one of his chief strengths is being able to outsing most so-called melodic rappers. His song "By My Lonely" from the album I'm Him samples "Lonely" by Speaker Knockerz, the massively influential South Carolina rapper who was killed at 19. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Gates and Speaker Knockerz are somewhat kindred spirits, but Gates still makes the sample his own with bulletproof lyrics that are ripped from Gates's violent, pre-rap days.
