Kanye West has announced that his Mary opera, first staged in an aquatic arena in Miami earlier this month, will be staged on dry land(!) in New York City. The opera, in which Kanye paints himself silver and re-enacts the nativity, features West’s Sunday Service choir — who featured on his recent album Jesus Is King — and was directed by the rapper’s longtime collaborator Vanessa Beecroft. The New York edition of the opera will take place this coming Sunday, December 22nd at Lincoln Centre.
Mary is West’s second opera, following Nebuchadnezzar, which was staged at the Hollywood Bowl last month. Nebuchadnezzar found West narrating the story of the titular king, and featured Sheck Wes in the titular role.
