The nominees for the 2020 Academy Awards were announced on Monday morning, with Joaquin Phoenix's Joker picking up 11 nominations. The Todd Philips-directed comic book origin story is the most nominated movie at this year's ceremony and will run in best picture, best director, and best actor for Phoenix. 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are close behind with ten nominations each ahead of the February 9 event.
This year's Oscars includes six nominations for South Korean drama Parasite. Bong Joon-Ho's heavily metaphorical thriller will compete for best picture, becoming the first Korean film in history to do so.
Nominating a foreign language film for best picture is one of a small handful of nods to diversity by the Academy, with Cynthia Erivo's turn in Harriet making her the only person of color nominated across four acting categories. Scarlett Johansson is nominated for best actress and best supporting actress for Marriage Story and Joji Rabbit, respectively.
All five directors nominated for best director, meanwhile, are men. Little Women, Greta Gerwig's remake of the Louisa May Alcott classic, received six nominations, including best picture, yet there was no room for her in the directing category.
Other big snubs include Jennifer Lopez missing out on a best supporting actress nomination for Hustlers and Beyoncé's "Spirit" not making it into best original song. A24 movies The Farewell and Uncut Gems were both shut out entirely, receiving zero nominations.
