As one might expect of Adam Sandler, the comedian delivered a hilarious acceptance speech at last night's Independent Spirit Awards. Picking up the award for Best Male Lead for his role in Uncut Gems, the actor launched into a speech with plenty of jokes at the expense of the Oscars, his fellow nominees as well as himself.
“I’d also like to give a shout-out to my fellow nominees, who will now and forever be known as the guys who lost to fucking Adam Sandler,” he joked to the crowd.
He later talked about his Oscar snub, comparing it to his days in high school when he was passed over for a "Best Looking" Yearbook category win for a "jean jacket-wearing, feather-haired douchebag," but ended up with a "Best Personality" win. “Tonight, as I look around this room, I realize the Independent Spirit Awards are the ‘Best Personality’ awards of Hollywood,” Sandler went on to add. “So when those feather-haired douchebag motherfuckers get their Oscars tomorrow night, their handsome good looks will fade in time, while our independent personalities will shine on forever!”
He went on to say that independent films have been "a big part of the Adam Sandler ecosystem," and jokingly painted Billy Madison and The Waterboy as films with larger political and introspective overtones—indie film hallmarks. "I have tried to sell my truths with a truly independent spirit, while also cashing some truly, disturbingly large paychecks," he quipped.
