Ava DuVernay is working on a Nipsey Hussle documentary
Netflix has reportedly won the battle for the doc.
At this year's Grammys, Ava DuVernay introduced Meek Mill, DJ Khaled, John Legend, Roddy Ricch, Kirk Franklin, and YG to the stage for their tribute to the late Nipsey Hussle. The Hollywood Reporter states that DuVernay will take her involvement with the rapper, who was shot and killed in 2019, by working on a documentary alongside his family.
Details of the doc are scarce at the moment, with DuVernay's role unknown. She has directed documentaries in the past including the Oscar-nominated 13th but it is not known if she will take on that role for this project or whether it will be produced by her production company, Array.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, however, it is understood that Netflix has beaten both Apple and Amazon to be the home of the documentary. It is reported that the streaming giant paid a figure in the "teens of millions" for the rights.
Hussle worked with DuVernay in the past, taking part in the awards season press tour for 13th in 2016. He was shot and killed in Los Angeles on March 31, 2019. In May of that year a grand jury indicted Eric Holder, 29, with murder, attempted murder and other felonies. He has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
