Watch Aaberg’s twilit video for “Moonling”
Directed by Hunter Mockett himself.
Across his three albums as Aaberg, South London's Hunter Mockett has released some intensely solitary-sounding songs. His influences aren't impossible to discern — Elliott Smith, (Sandy) Alex G, and even Sebadoh's more brittle acoustic stuff is all there — but the quiet feedback interjections and ever-present white noise almost entirely consume his music. On "Moonling," a single released on Calf back in January, he was almost inaudible beneath his looping guitar, save for the appropriately eerie line, "Safe under the waves."
In the video for "Moonling," premiering at the top of the page, Mockett has pieced together disorienting, mostly twilit footage, all as sparsely populated as the song itself. "The music often feels visual when I’m making it, so putting images to it can feel quite intuitive," Mockett wrote in an email to The FADER. "The video is a kind of stream of consciousness that came directly from the song."
