FKA twigs has revealed further details of a new album she wrote and recorded in lockdown, hinting that new music from the project could be out as soon as this week.
twigs first spoke of her new music late last year, revealing that she worked primarily with Rosalía producer El Guincho on the project. Today, January 25, twigs guested on the Grounded podcast from documentary maker Louis Theroux where she spoke about the music in more detail.
She told Theroux that she spent 2020 making new music with a host of collaborators after plans to tour her last album, 2019's Magdelene, were scuppered by the global pandemic.
"Over lockdown I wrote an album, all over the internet," twigs said. "All working with people I've never worked with before. I've got more collaborations and features on this album than I've ever had before. The majority of the people I've never met in real life. We spent a lot of time with each other over FaceTime. It's a real product of 2020. It's about being able to have my work represent landmarks in time. To make an album over FaceTime is the epitome of an artist being isolated and still having the desire to make work. So I felt that I did that."
Theroux's interview with twigs also touched on her recent pursuit of legal action against former partner Shia LaBeouf, accusing him of assault, sexual battery, and inflicting emotional distress. Asked if her experiences with the actor would be reflected in the new music, twigs suggested that it would not.
"My next music is, ironically, a lot lighter than the usual music that I make," she said. "I spent so much time in darkness with him [LaBeouf] that in lockdown I've been missing my friends and going out, getting ready, and dancing. I've wanted to make music for the people closest to me that I love."
The wait to hear the material may be a short one, too. On Sunday, January 24, twigs shared an Instagram post asking "did someone say they wanted new music?" and adding: "might have something for you this week…"
Since releasing Magdalene in 2019 twigs has collaborated with squeaky-voiced rapper 645AR, teamed up with Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign on "Ego Death," and joined Dua Lipa on stage as part of her Studio 2054 livestream gig. Her debut album, LP1, was released in 2014.
