Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe will star as "Weird Al" Yankovic in an upcoming biopic of the parody songwriter. Weird: The “Weird Al” Yankovic Story will be co-written and produced by Yankovic; Eric Appel will serve as co-writer, producer, and director. Funny Or Die will produce the film for The Roku Channel.
“When my last movie UHF came out in 1989," Yankokvic said in a statement obtained by Deadline, "I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule. And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.”
A statement from Colin Davis, Roku's Head of Original Programming, suggests that the film won't follow a traditional biopic narrative. “There clearly aren’t enough biopic movies about famous musicians and we were excited to shine a light on the incredibly true, unexaggerated story of Weird Al,” David said.
In 2013, Appel directed a standalone trailer for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story. Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul starred as Yankovic. Watch that below.
