19-year-old Londoner Yaz's "Mr Valentine" video begins with her driving a vintage sports car considerably older than she is through deserted country roads. The sense of freedom is palpable and is matched by the song, underpinned by a skippy garage beat that conjures up early 2000s nostalgia in those too young to have lived through the era itself. Laying her heart on the line, Yaz makes her position clear. "I might risk it all, if you treat me like a princess," she sings as the BPM matches her rising heartbeat.
In the "Mr Valentine" video, premiering above, Yaz reveals the object of her affection. TikTok-style footage of a trip to Paris flashes by as the couple dine in a fancy restaurant, bask in the light of the Eiffel Tower, and relax in face masks. It's a loving collection of memories from a relationship's early stages.
Speaking about the video via email, Yaz told The FADER: "The idea behind the music video for 'Mr Valentine' is that i’m revisiting old memories of being with my boyfriend, Mr Valentine, whilst I’m alone in a vintage car. The concept reflects how I wrote the song whilst reminiscing."
