Song You Need: Madonna and Sickick’s “Frozen on Fire” is an undeniable heater

Madonna is an undeniably terrible steward of her own legacy — you can’t really be a groundbreaking pop icon in multiple decades without being something of an anti-nostalgist. The way she’s treated Sickick’s TikTok-viral trap remix of her immortal Ray Of Light-era single “Frozen” is a perfect example of this: Rather than let it simply sit as a strange revival of the original, she gave the remix an official release and added verses by 070 Shake and Fireboy DML, sharing videos for each.

It’s the definition of flogging a dead horse, but with the latest redo of the Sickick remix, I think she’s onto something. Finding both Madge and Sickick adding new vocals, “Frozen On Fire” plays more like a pop song that samples the original track, an eerie piece of trap-pop that, somehow, is the platonic ideal of a 2022 Madonna update. It’s alien and icy and kind of intoxicating.
