Lil Nas X aired his grievances after being snubbed by BET Awards
“Black gay people have to fight to be seen in this world,” the musician tweeted.
Lil Nas X has expressed his frustration after receiving zero nominations at this year's BET Awards. in a series of since-deleted tweets first posted on Wednesday, Nas suggested that the success of his album Montero merited recognition while also highlighting the fact that he was shut out in 2021, too.
“thank you, bet awards. an outstanding zero nominations again. black excellence,” one tweet read. Later, responding to a follower asking why he felt he deserved nominations, Nas responded: "IDK, maybe 3 of the biggest songs of last year and a critically acclaimed album. I feel like that should’ve helped me a bit."
Addressing the elephant in the room Nas, who is on tour from September, went on to tweet, “black gay people have to fight to be seen in this world.” Adding: "[It] doesn’t even have to be me nominated. I just feel like…even when we make it to the top mfs try to pretend we are invisible."
Lil Nas X was among the performers at the 2021 BET Awards, despite not being nominated for an award. In 2020 he was shortlisted in the Best New Artist category but lost out to Roddy Ricch.
Doja Cat is the most-nominated artist at the 2022 BET Awards with six, including in Album of the Year for her 2021 project Planet Her. Elsewhere, Ari Lennox and Drake scored four nominations each, while Baby Keem, Kendrick Lamar and H.E.R. picked up three each.
