Watch Toro y Moi and Eric André’s Goes By So Fast: A Mahal Film
The short is a companion piece for Toro y Moi’s recent project MAHAL.
Toro y Moi's album MAHAL dropped on April 29, and a couple of weeks before the psych-rock project dropped we got a trailer for a short film tie-in. Directed by longtime Toro y Moi collaborator Harry Israelson, Goes By So Fast: A Mahal Film costars Toro (a.k.a. Chaz Bear) and Eric André of the anarchic Adult Swim hit The Eric André Show. Today, the film is available to stream online.
The 12-minute clip starts with a stranded Chaz getting picked up by André (who plays an eccentric San Francisco resident named Panther) in an open-air taxi called a Jeepney. The film cuts between the two men looking for a lost dog, Toro y Moi music performances, and a segment explaining the historical significance of the Jeepneys, which were created in the Philippines decades ago out of abandoned American military vehicles.
“Shortly after finding the Jeepney," Chaz Bear said in a press statement, "ideas for films and videos immediately came to mind. Given the more serious themes of the record, Harry and I both felt it fitting to come up with something humorous and fun. I wanted to make something that humanized the music and hopefully myself in ways. Knowing that I’m not much of an actor and somewhat reserved, we felt it was best to find a supporting actor who would bring some context to the 'man behind the curtain.' We felt Eric Andre's character, Panther, was the perfect high-sporadic energy to match my persona, giving context to my introverted tendencies. I loved the entire process and I think fans will be able to see the fun we had making it.”
