Polo Perks samples Alex G for new track “Allyndale Dr.”
The song features a snippet of “Gretel,” from 2019’s House of Sugar.
Polo Perks has a track record for rapping over instantly familiar pop songs, from established classics to throwback earworms. It matters little whether these gestures are genuine homages or — as he suggested in an interview with The FADER — SEO plays; they’re incredibly fun to listen to.
Today, Perks has returned with a track called “Allyndale Dr.” featuring a Holdmyhanzo beat that samples a slightly less mainstream but equally beloved cut: “Gretel,” from FADER cover star Alex G’s 2019 LP House of Sugar. Over that song’s iconic hook — “I don’t wanna go back / Nobody’s gonna push me off track” — Perks expounds on everything from lost friends (the late DeMonte “Speedy” Anozine, Vincenzo “Smithy” Constantino, and Jeana “Fiji” McNeil, to whom the track is dedicated) to posturing enemies to unfaithful lovers. Ultimately, he agrees with Alex G, concluding that the only way forward is to stare straight ahead, foot firmly fixed to the gas pedal.
