Will Anderson's Hotline TNT project pulls from all kinds of different eras of guitar noise to great effect. On their latest single "Protocol," their first on Third Man Records, the New York group are more deeply exploring the shoegaze influences they first displayed on songs like "Stampede" from their 2021 album Nineteen in Love. That's the mode I like them best in, and they've never sounded better than on "Protocol."
“This song is about falling on a sword," Anderson said in a statement. "Sometimes you just gotta hold an L even when in your heart of hearts you know it's not fair. Saving the relationship is worth taking the blame now and again.” The song's music video, directed by Fiona Kane visualizes a fraying relationship in a low-budget, black-and-white style with a charm that recalls early '90s MTV videos. "It's a rock n roll push and pull silent comedy for summer," Kane says. "The most important parts of summer are beating the heat and listening to rock music."
