DJ Haram announces Handplay EP, shares title track
The four-track tape is due out on December 1 via Hyperdub.
DJ Haram has announced a new EP titled Handplay and released its lead single, which is also its opener and title track. The tape, due out December 1 via Hyperdub, is essentially a double single, with “Handplay” and its as-yet-unreleased companion “No Funeral” representing side A and their respective instrumentals comprising side B.
“Handplay” is a a hyper-sensual onslaught of industrial 909s, dissonant flute, and a scrum of sultry cooing and whispers, with Haram’s deadpan vocal line riding the wave, repeating the word “gushy” until it becomes part of the rhythm track. Per a press release, the genre-fluid Philadelphia producer and occasional emcee conceived the cut as “an ode to and celebration of sex workers” and a reflection on “pleasure and reward.”

Handplay is Haram’s first Hyperdub release since 2019’s Grace, her debut EP for the London label. In 2021, she self-released the three-track tape Era. And last year, she and Moor Mother dropped Nothing To Declare, their first collaborative LP as 700 Bliss.
