OpenAI has announced GPTs, a new platform for creating custom versions of their AI-based chatbots. The new venture is available now to paid ChatGPT subscribers and Enterprise users, and no previous coding experience is necessary to get started.

GPTs was announced on November 6 during OpenAI’s developer conference, DevDay. A user can create their own GPT by inputting exactly what it is they want the function to be — learning board game rules, help with creative writing, or design tips, for example. The GPT assembles its knowledge based on your cues — specific data-gathering methods, like searching the internet or analyzing images, will require user permissions.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman boasted of the potentially limitless possibilities of GPTs. “You can build a GPT— a customized version of ChatGPT — for almost anything,” Altman said during his DevDay address, “because they combine instructions, expanded knowledge, and actions, they can be more helpful to you.”

“Since launching ChatGPT, people have been asking for ways to customize ChatGPT to fit specific ways that they use it,” OpenAI wrote in their announcement. “We launched Custom Instructions in July that let you set some preferences, but requests for more control kept coming. Many power users maintain a list of carefully crafted prompts and instruction sets, manually copying them into ChatGPT. GPTs now do all of that for you.”

Users will be able to sell their custom-made GPTs in a store, coming later this month. OpenAI says that it will share revenue with the creators of the most popular GPTs, and that users can charge for subscriptions to their creations (Enterprise subscribers will have the option of building GPTs that can only be used by employees within a given company).

“We designed GPTs so more people can build with us.” OpenAI wrote. “Involving the community is critical to our mission of building safe [Artificial General Intelligence] that benefits humanity. It allows everyone to see a wide and varied range of useful GPTs and get a more concrete sense of what’s ahead. And by broadening the group of people who decide ‘what to build’ beyond just those with access to advanced technology it’s likely we’ll have safer and better-aligned AI.”
