The FADER’s transgender charity covers compilation FADER & Friends Volume 1 is out now, available exclusively on Bandcamp until December 1, 2023. 100% of the proceeds go towards the Transgender Law Center, Mermaids, and Rainbow Railroad. Throughout the month of November, we’re speaking to the artists who contributed to the 44-song collection about the songs they covered.
Today we've got blackwinterwells, hyperpop producer wunderkind turned genre-defying solo artist, covering "An Honest Mistake" by The Bravery. It's the kind of song that enjoyed placement in melodramatic teen drama series around 2005, but it has the distinction of introducing a whole generation of kids to new wave and synth-pop. The song holds a special place in wells' heart, and her cover reflects that infectious enthusiasm.

What's your first memory of this song?
Hearing the Superdiscount remix of it on the Burnout Revenge soundtrack. Very good track to obliterate supercars to.
Why did you decide to record it as your cover?
Sam Endicott’s vocal break is the exact same note as mine. Most of the songs I write don’t fit in my range as well as this song does.
What does this song mean to you personally?
I think everything about it is just really inspiring to me. The texture, the writing. I think post-punk and new wave are like the coolest aesthetics ever and this is up there with "Obstacle 1" for me as the best of the former.
What's another song you'd love to cover and why?
It’s hard to say because I’ve already covered so many songs. But I’ve always wanted to do a fully produced version of "Snuff" by Slipknot. Maybe a Kid A sort of arrangement.
