The 2019 blockbuster video game Death Stranding is being developed into a movie, Variety reports. The movie version of the action game will be produced by A24 in collaboration with the game's developer, Hideo Kojima.

Death Stranding is an inherently cinematic game, with actor Norman Reedus voicing the protagonist Sam Porter Bridges. The Bridges character is tasked with “reuniting a splintered America” on the verge of collapse following a near-apocalyptic event. The game also stars Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, Elle Fanning, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Margaret Qualley.

A synopsis from A24 and Kojima Productions reads: “The film promises to delve into the mysteries surrounding the apocalyptic event called the ‘Death Stranding,’ which blurred the lines between life and death, and brought forth nightmarish creatures into a world on the brink of collapse.”

In October it was reported that A24, renowned for its independent status and championing of original storytelling in movies such as Midsommar and Everything Everywhere All at Once, was looking to embrace IP and produce more commercial material. The news of the Death Stranding movie comes the day after it was confirmed that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is to star in The Smashing Machine, a new movie from director Benny Safdie about the UFC fighter Mark Kerr.
