Lil Nas X has gone 15 months without releasing new music, a surprisingly long time given how effectively the pop artist channeled the success of “Old Town Road” into a string of hits in a relatively short amount of time. One of the key factors in his ascent was his keen understanding of how internet discourse works and how to bend it to his will, something he’s been flexing again recently.
Browse his TikTok page and you’ll see several videos he posted recently, claiming to have been blackballed by his record label as a result of his ostensible conversion to Christianity, along with promises of a new song that will expose the evil inner workings of the industry. This would be a big win for Jesus, as Nas is also famous for a music video where he gives Satan a lap dance as well as a subsequent Lucifer-themed shoe drop.
Unfortunately for the Christians flooding his page with comments praising his “testimony,” this is almost definitely a bit. The new song, however, is a real thing. It’s called “J Christ,” and it’s out on Friday, January 12. You can see the cover art above, and if that doesn’t confirm for you that this is a troll, perhaps Nas’s statement on the track will: “My new single is dedicated to the man who had the greatest comeback of all time!”
Lil Nas’s debut album Montero dropped in August 2021. His last single, “Star Walkin,” was released in September 2022.
