no na are welcoming fans into the world of their album Island Girl (out September 18).
The viral global girl group from Indonesia released "speaker freaker (the long song)" a 13-minute short film that includes snippets from eight songs on their debut album including the already released "rollerblade” and “work.” The lush, highly cinematic video was shot across Indonesia, including in Jakarta and Yogyakarta, and features shots of the country's gorgeous coast and its bustling urban centers. The songs previewed have a distinctly 2000s flare, with notes of Detroit-style Ghettotech, infused with the propulsive sounds from Indonesia such as gamelan.
"'speaker freaker (the long song)' is our fun little nod to mixtapes from the ’90s and early 2000s," the group tells The FADER via email. "We loved the idea of taking people through the different tracks on island girl almost like they’re listening to a mixtape, and giving them a taste of the album before it’s fully out."
"For the long song video, we imagined it as an island girl road trip," they go on. "We filmed across Jakarta and Jogja, moving through different places and showing some of the many sides of Indonesia along the way. It was really important for us to bring that Indonesian pride into the visual world of the album and share where we come from."
"More than anything, we wanted the introduction to island girl to feel fun, playful, and a little unexpected. Instead of just teasing the songs one by one, 'speaker freaker (the long song)' felt like a much more ‘no na’ way to welcome everyone into our world."
The group has been on a roll since the January release of "work" and its viral music video. Since then, its members — Baila, Christy, Esther, and Shaz — have become rising global stars, defining a new wave of girl group pop they define as Island Pop.
island girl will be released September 18 and is available for pre-order and pre-save here.
