Go behind the scenes of Kim Petras’s “Autobahn” music video

Kim Petras is back for another Detour.

The German pop star has released the deluxe version of her May album Detour titled Detour (Rare N' Deluxe), featuring four new songs. The new set of tracks includes the Ray Of Light-esque crooner "Autobahn" — a sister song of sorts to Petras's Detour standout and fellow car-centric anthem "Jeep." The song is "about unrequited love," says Petras, who spoke to The FADER via email. "For 'Autobahn,' I was thinking about what it feels like when someone doesn’t want you back — like you’re walking aimlessly in the wrong direction with a broken compass."

The nostalgic track features a peppy drum beat with acoustic guitar and early-aughts style acid synths. Petras says its primary sonic inspiration was "2000s Michelle Branch." On it, Petras writes about desire with humor and plainspokenness, singing, "When can I see you again? (I'm just gonna walk into) / Oncoming traffic and then (Maybe I'll get over you)."

The new track comes alongside a Neve Abcari-directed music video which shows Petras walking along a Los Angeles "Autobahn" in her 2000s Euro attire. At one point, she dons Gretel-style German garb, a nod to her upbringing in Germany. In May, Petras had a wide-ranging conversation with The FADER about going independent, Detour, and her upbringing as a trans child in Germany — an experience she spoke candidly on the track "Brutalist."
