All On’Y'all Da Mixtape by Mr. Jib Kidder

February 04, 2008

As avid dancefloor freakers, we usually have problems with folks who “experiment” with our favorite club jams and forget to check the time signature, cutting and pasting the twingling bells of Pharrell and the twittering drums of Timbo into no-beat-havin’ farts we can barely chicken-noodle-soup to. We are neither trying to be interpretive dancers to Mystikal, nor do we expect to be perfecting our NC-17 cirque du soleil anytime soon. BUT! We will make an exception for Jib Kidder’s All On Y’all: Da Mixtape, downloadable for a wee $5 at this very moment from Portland, Oregon’s States Rights Records, or out the trunk of your fave outre mixtape slanga. With Atlanta bass and NOLA bounce in his pocket, plus an admitted beat-crush on Mannie Fresh, Jib Kidder (government name: Sean Yent Schuster-Craig) selected random beats and samples from populist numbers (“Roll Bounce,” “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “Shake Ya Ass”) and rearranged them like a jigsaw puzzle with rhythm and funk. Right now we are really feeling the track “Thug & Chicken” for its stuttering trumpets and catlike “Meows” – because it is the year of the kitten (KITTYBOWL ’08)!! There are disco tracks and one that sounds like bluegrass to us. There may also be a manifesto: this mixtape cover is all trunk-thumping, Pen & Pixel as remixed by Jodorowsky (who gets namedropped in his exclusive YACHT remix, p.s.).
