Cold Showers’ Love and Regret is a relentlessly dark record, the same way a Joy Division record is relentlessly dark. It's a state of mind as much as it is a singular emotion to build something significant around. But there's some hope in here, too, with "Don't Mind," a starkly simple highlight, lyrics like Oh sweet lord, I've swallowed my pride/ Go on, do my drugs, waste all of my time/ Pray for the day when what's wrong will be okay>. It's simultaneously general and specific. That last bit though: pray for the day when what's wrong will be okay is so beautifully concise. That feeling extends to much of Love and Regret, which is honest and open and simple (in a good way!). It feels like all these songs could have existed forever. Love and Regret is out today, October 9th, on Dais.
