Bay Area rapper The Jacka has died after being shot in East Oakland on Monday night, CBS San Francisco reports. No suspects have yet been identified.
Born as Dominic Newton, before later converting to Islam and taking the name Shaheed Akbar, The Jacka was a stalwart in San Francisco's rap community alongside the likes of Mac Dre and E-40. Originally from Pittsburg, he began his career in the early 00s as a member of Mob Figaz before striking out on his own. Most recently, he dropped Highway Robbery, a collaborative album with Philly rapper Freeway, in 2014.
Voices of hip-hop far and wide have shared their shock and sadness at the news online.
