The line of influence from Elvis Costello to Spectrals is immediately obvious, so we'll get that out of the way now. Spectrals frontman Louis Jones has the same nasal, mopey voice, and he uses it to great effect, allowing it to lilt and virtually drape over syrupy slide guitar and laconic country jangle on "Sob Story," a song that feels like something of an arrival for Jones—a transition from scrappy band dude to fully-formed songwriter with the weight of the world on his shoulders. "Sob Story" comes from the album of the same name, which is out June 18th on Slumberland.
