Watch Lena Waithe explain how she’s influenced by Kanye West
“I’m gonna keep messing with your mind.”
Lena Waithe was a guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers to talk about her role in Ready Player One, as well as her show The Chi, which closes out its first season on Showtime this Sunday. The show is based off her real experiences growing up on Chicago's Southside, and, as Meyers pointed out, totally different from her other current show, Master of None, which is somewhat of a series rom-com, or her other upcoming show Twenties, which was just ordered to pilot. Waithe explained that her ability to juggle different roles comes from a Kanye West mentality.
“Here’s what I’ll say: here’s the dope thing about Kanye," she told Meyers. "Every album, you didn’t know what Kanye you were gonna get. It was always different, it was always fresh, but it was always dope. You couldn’t not talk about it. So for me, it’s like everything, from Master Of None, The Chi, Ready Player One, I like to keep people guessing. And, I think, sometimes people want to put you in a box. I’m like, ‘No, not this kid.’ Like, ‘I’m gonna keep messing with your mind.’ Next thing, I might do a Scorsese movie. I might be his [assistant director]. I don’t know.”
Waithe also shares some extremely strong opinions about New York pizza, which she decidedly against. Watch the full interview below.
