Sophie Allison (Soccer Mommy) announced her forthcoming third studio LP last month with the release of its lead offering, "Shotgun." Sometimes, Forever, produced by Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), is scheduled to arrive June 24 on Loma Vista. And today, Allison has shared its second single, "Unholy Affliction."
Whereas "Shotgun" sat squarely in Allison's dreamy indie rock wheelhouse — albeit with a fair number of Lopatin's hauntological fingerprints smudged on its surface — the new song is sonically heavier than anything she's previously put out. Centering a synth bass that moans and growls in the shadow of an industrial drum line, the track finds Allison in a minor mode, her pained vocal line stretching through the cracks of the instrumental.
