Rema and Selena Gomez share video for their “Calm Down” remix
Gomez’s rework of the Rave & Roses cut arrived late last month.
In late August, Selena Gomez blessed “Calm Down,” a standout from Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema’s March debut LP, Rave & Roses, with a remix. And today, a new visual treatment for the track’s Gomez redux has arrived.
While not a direct remake, the new video stays close to the color palette and general aesthetic of the original song’s accompanying clip, with Rema and Selena gliding through a series of stylish outfit changes in an array of tastefully decorated rooms. Their chemistry is flirty but their dancing is casual, imbuing the clip with a relaxed energy that pairs well with the single. Watch it above.
“Calm Down” is only the latest track from Rema’s last project to be reconstructed in recent months. Since the release of Rave & Roses, he’s also shared two official remixes of mid-album cut “Soundgasm:” one from DJ Yo! and Max Wallin’ and another by Puri and The Plugz Europe. He also collaborated with Lisbon-based singer Gerilson Insrael on a joint track titled “Dance” back in May. Check out Lawrence Burney’s 2019 Rema cover story here.
Gomez has dropped music at a slow but steady clip since the release of her 2020 LP Rare and her March 2021 Spanish-language debut, the Revelación EP, which includes the DJ Snake collab “Selfish Love.” In the past 18 months, she’s released songs with Camilo and Coldplay. In May, she was one of 160 high-profile female artists — also including Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, Olivia Rodrigo, and Halsey — to support the #BansOffOurBodies campaign after the Supreme Court’s decision to reverse a half century of reproductive rights progress by overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked a month early. Only Murders in the Building, a Hulu series starring Gomez alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short, was renewed for a third season in July.
