There are safe ways to choke someone. Avoid the windpipe, start soft and increase the pressure, use safety words and intervals. With degradation, there’s a person-to-person etiquette to consider: Where to spit? How much viscosity? Where to slap? How much intensity? Isabella Lovestory seems to know the answers intrinsically. Born in Honduras and based in Montreal, the progressive perreo-pop artist shared a new album last week called Amor Hardcore. It’s an aptly titled collection of left-field jams where the dancefloor and the bedroom are interchangeable.
On “Tacon,” (Spanish for “heel,”) Lovestory adopts the role of an uber-dominatrix, sweepingly confident in her skills and station. “Tell me how my heel feels in your mouth (plastic, leather, diabolical),” she coos in Spanish as 8-bit synths chime next to shuddering reggaeton drums. Her guests — the neoperreo artists Six Sex, Meth Math, and OH!DULCEARi — sound like extensions of her conscience rather than individuals, brimming with lusty defiance. “I have thorns and I have roses / Daddy, I dominate you whenever I want,” OH!DULCEARi sings, a mission statement for the sweaty, sinful track.
