Back in June, Inglewood singer-songwriter Brandon Banks shared Natural Progressions, a lush tapestry of slick neo-soul and rawer, funkier sounds. Today, he’s returning with the project’s nine-minute visual companion piece, directed by Jacob “Kuba” Bojsza and bearing the same name as its source material.
The clip is a non-linear collage of fragmented imagery — from the breathtaking beauty of the American west to the chaotic, empty signifiers of our late-capitalist nightmare — soundtracked by select songs from the record and drawing on its lyrical and emotional iconography.
“This film is a visual mosaic with elements of real life and nostalgic dreams that is scored by the music from my project,” Banks tells The FADER. “Natural Progressions means just that: This project represents where I am in my life currently and is an attempt to humanize artistry in a way that shows people we are all trying to make it out of something, in some way. My way of getting out is by pouring my life energy into music to the best of my ability with the tools currently at hand, and as I continue to live and learn I will continue to progress.”
