Spotify is shuttering Heardle
The streaming giant bought the daily music trivia game in July.
Popular daily music trivia game Heardle will go dark on May 5. The announcement — posted as a message on the game’s site and app today (April 14) and first reported on by IGN — comes just nine months after Spotify purchased the company for an undisclosed sum.
Heardle was one of the few spinoffs of the ubiquitous guessing game Wordle (purchased by The New York Times in January 2022) with staying power. Taking a queue from its predecessor, Heardle gave players six attempts to pick out a popular tune, getting a slightly longer snippet of the song with each try.
Spotify began rolling out a major redesign in February, featuring a TikTok-style discovery feed, an A.I.-powered listening guide cleverly named DJ, and an option for artists to forfeit 30 percent of their streaming royalties to the company in exchange for increased playlist exposure.
