Peso Pluma is the new face of corridos tumbados, a fast-growing genre that embraces the modernity and multiculturalism of Latin trap while maintaining the distinctly Mexican character of traditional corridos. So far this spring, the Jalisco-born singer-rapper-songwriter has joined Becky G on stage at Coachella to perform their joint single “Chanel,” released a week prior; seen his Eslabon Armado collab “Ella Baila Sola” top Billboard’s Hot 100 chart (the first single characterized as a “regional Mexican” song ever to do so); and hung up on The Los Angeles Times.
Today, he’s kicked off the month of June with an appearance on Argentine producer Bizarrap’s absurdly popular YouTube series, BZRP Music Sessions. (BZRP’s 2023 season began with an ultra-viral Shakira collaboration.)
“Session #55” begins as a lovesick breakup song but quickly morphs into a momumental flex on Pluma’s ex. Sonically, it’s a straightforward corrido tumbado (with the exception of some well-placed foley effects) until its outro, when trap drums and a sub bass take over.
