With his new album Switched-On arriving this Friday, September 29, Pachyman has shared the record’s third and final single, “Sale el Sol.” The new song — and the forthcoming project as a whole — sees the Puerto Rico-born, Los Angeles-based artist retracing his roots to PR in the 1960s, when the scene was beginning to incorporate sounds from elsewhere in the Caribbean, as well as synthesized ones. Here, Pachyman plays an old-school Korg Poly-800, a nod to the ones who first waded into the waters he now swims in so comfortably.
“The song’s deconstructing some of the rhythms I’m used to playing and restructuring them in a way that makes sense for me, but also creating a whole new style of music with a lot of my influences in it,” Pachyman tells The FADER. “Made sense to me to make a repetitive vocal pattern, this time paying homage to the sun that rises for us every morning. It’s also kind of a nostalgic call to my life in Puerto Rico years ago.”
Today, Pachyman premieres the visual treatment for “Sale el Sol” with The FADER. Directed by Owen Summers, the video follows Pachyman as he schleps, sets up, and rearranges a group of speaker monitors that look like colorful puzzle pieces. Watch it below.
