Spotify has acquired a patent for the “generation and distribution of a digital mixtape,” Music Business Worldwide reports. The full document, obtained by MBW, says the new function will allow Spotify users to create “a user-defined compilation of media content, at least in part from a catalog of media content, and share it with friends over a data communication network. Voice messages or other audio can be added to the compilation to further customize the compilation for the recipient.”
In other words, Spotify subscribers will now be able to use their own audio to make intros and transitions for their playlists, adding a personal touch that will make them optimal for sharing with friends, lovers, and crushes.
“People enjoy creating customized collections of music and sharing them with friends,” the patent explains. “In more recent times, many people no longer own personal collections of music from which a mixtape can be generated… While online music streaming services allow users to access a large catalog of music, the ability to compile customized collections of music, and share music with others, is limited.”
Back in February, Spotify came out with an AI-powered DJ function that can speak between songs (as a radio DJ would) and offer recommendations based on listening history.
