Internet comedian Benito Skinner a.k.a. Benny Drama got his start making unhinged shorts for the internet but now he's making his transition to the small screen. Overcompensating, his new "semiautobiographical" show for Amazon Prime is finally making its debut this year, and the first trailer for the series — where he plays a closeted football player navigating the many crises of college — is finally here.
The series got a lot of attention when it was initially announced due to its high-powered cast which includes Charli xcx, who also serves as the show's executive music producer. Per the trailer, it seems like she'll be playing a wackier version of herself as she gets off a hilarious line about her career. "Do you think I wanna play ’Boom Clap’ to a f*cking college?" she screams to a poor campus show booker.
The show's logline describes the series as a "college-set ensemble comedy about the wild, chaotic journey of Benny (Skinner), a closeted former football player and Idaho homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen, a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs." It'll hit the classic growing-up touchstones like hookups, wild parties, and fake IDs (in the trailer alone, Skinner can be seen in several compromising intimate positions.) Besides Charli and Skinner, Wally Baram, Mary Beth Barone, Adam DiMarco, Rish Shah, Kaia Gerber, and more make up the cast. The series is co-produced by A24.
As for Charli, this is just the first of several acting roles she's set to tackle in the coming months as she's signed on to act in and produce at least seven different films and shows. In March, Deadline reported that Greta Gerwig was eyeing the star for a role in her Narnia reboot.
Overcompensating premieres on Amazon Prime on May 15. Check out the trailer below.
